Learning event: Dementia in black and minority ethnic communities: meeting the challenge

This free one-day event, run jointly by the Race Equality Foundation and Age UK explored the role of the voluntary and community sector in delivering better support to black and minority ethnic older people with dementia.  The conference brought together practitioners from across the health, social care and voluntary and community sectors to share their concerns and suggestions for good practice.  A range of issues were identified in dementia care for minority ethnic people, including:

  • poor assessment and late diagnosis by health practitioners
  • limited engagement with and participation by black and minority ethnic communities in strategic decision-making
  • isolation and stigma for people with dementia and their carers.

The key learning from the event is summarised in the following report, which was produced to coincide with the G8 Dementia Summit:
