Briefing 15: Linking black and minority ethnic organisations with mainstream homeless service providers
This paper argues that homelessness service provision to black and minority ethnic communities should be informed by in-depth knowledge and understanding of the causes, manifestations and perceptions of homelessness, and should address the significant barriers these communities face when accessing homelessness services. The paper also highlights significant differences between black and minority ethnic and mainstream organisations, and possible improvements that could be gained by forging stronger links between them, including increased awareness of homelessness services, access to early intervention and ongoing support to vulnerable individuals

Briefing 19: Health and access to health care of migrants in the UK
The growing size and diversity of the proportion of the UK population who were born overseas have important implications for meeting health needs and for planning and delivering health services. By bringing together available evidence, this briefing outlines some important issues for the health of migrants in the UK today. It also suggests ways in which research, policy and practice might address barriers to health, well-being and health care in meeting the needs of migrants.

Race Equality Foundation to partake in NHS Local Leadership, National Service Conference
This year’s NHS Confederation Conference and Exhibition will take place in Liverpool from 23-25 June 2010. The conference is a key event for senior health leaders, as the NHS Confederation is the only membership body for all types of NHS organisations with over 95 per cent membership in the UK.
The 2010 conference programme will explore the theme of Local Leadership, National Service by focusing on:
- Government priorities after the general election;
- Policy in times of financial austerity;
- New ideas and strategies in health care;
- Best practice examples from the NHS and independent sector;
- Current priorities for NHS Trusts.

2010 SFSC Conference date announced
This year’s Strengthening Families, Strengthening Communities conference will be held in London on 19th July 2010. This event celebrates the 10 year anniversary of SFSC delivery in the UK, reflecting on the last ten years and looking forward to the next ten. It will be an opportunity for parents, practitioners and policy makers to come together to look at how SFSC contributes to making parenting support inclusive and effective.

Briefing 18: Effective methods of engaging black and minority ethnic communities within health care settings
Evidence shows that poor engagement with black and minority ethnic communities in health care still exists, resulting in unequal access and care. Barriers to effective engagement with black and minority ethnic communities include those of language, communication and culture, as well as a lack of diversity in the health care workforce. A range of methods exists that can be utilised to enhance engagement with black and minority ethnic communities, as shown by the existence of good practice examples from London, Leeds and Bradford.

The Safe Network
The Race Equality Foundation has been working as a delivery partner for Safe Network, a national safeguarding unit jointly managed by NPCC and Children England (formerly NCVCCO). Designed to help third sector organisations protect children and young people, the Foundation has provided SN with guidance to ensure that the website supports black and minority ethnic organisations improve their safeguarding arrangements. The Safe Network website has a number of resources and toolkits which may be of use to black and minority ethnic groups working predominantly but not exclusively with children and young people. Better Health and Better Housing websites and newsletters launched!
We have recently launched 2 new websites designed to help frontline health and housing practitioners engage with and better understand race equality issues. Providing access to quickly expanding collections of free-to-view evidence-based briefing papers, resources and weblinks, Better Health and Better Housing also enable practitioners to share ideas and get involved with our good practice forums. To celebrate the launch of the sites, the Race Equality Foundation will also be giving members of the Better Health and Better Housing communities the opportunity to win an 8gb iPod Nano with Camera. Each month, one name will be selected from all site users who post on the forum. We are keen to hear your thoughts and feedback, so please do get involved and tell us your thoughts on the briefing papers, resource collection or current health and housing issues.
