Race Equality Foundation - Tackling Race Inequalities Programme
Background
The Race Equality Foundation has a programme of work that aims to tackle race inequalities and improve health and housing services to black and minority ethnic communities. Receiving a grant from the Communities and Local Government Tacking Race Inequalities Fund (2009- 2011) will enable the Foundation to move into another phase to pursue this work. We will focus on three themes a) promote equality of opportunity for people from black and minority ethnic groups; b) address inequalities of access to reduce the gaps in outcomes for people from black and minority ethnic groups; and c) work with particularly disadvantaged people within black and minority ethnic (BME) groups.
Aims
The Tackling Race Inequalities Programme will provide health and housing practitioners with the tools and knowledge to improve services to primarily African, Asian and African Caribbean communities. We will use different methods including briefing papers, events and web resources to support health and housing workers to embed race equality in their everyday practice.
How we will do the work:
- We will produce eight evidence based briefing papers targeted at front line staff and managers in primary care trust and housing organisations that focus on equality of opportunity, including workforce development and racist harassment. Three of which will focus on inequalities in access and reducing gaps in outcomes. For example, disabled people in rented accommodation. Others will focus on particularly disadvantaged groups, such as Caribbean men whose limited access to health services increases risk of poor outcomes.
- We will develop a web portal to embed good practice messages and develop networks of interest for health and housing practitioners. These resources will assist front line workers to address inequalities in access and how to reduce gaps in outcomes, as well as encouraging good practice to be shared.
- The project will further increase practitioners’ knowledge and understanding on the impact of race inequality through dissemination at national events, such as those of the National Housing Federation and National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence.
Outcomes
Health and housing practitioners will have a better understanding of how to promote equality of opportunity for black and minority ethnic communities.
Practitioners will find the web based resources effective in their use to inform and implement practice aimed at reducing inequalities and increasing access to services for BME communities.
